Almost all of the players we signed in the summer had not played at this level. When Lee, a tourism entrepreneur, invested in Nice there was talk about the club's prospects on the field, but also the opportunities open to them on the French Riviera. Similar opportunities are not immediately obvious in Barnsley, a market town in South Yorkshire.
Simon Chadwick, a professor of sport enterprise at Salford University, said it was both an "odd" choice and a "strange location" to buy a club when taking into consideration a Chinese government clampdown on "irrational investments", and the number of higher profile teams in the area.
When we talk about 'one belt, one road', we are talking trade routes, oil and gas and about possibly real estate opportunities. So far he has used football as a way of promoting and developing his tourism empire.
Chadwick added: "This is not a random purchase; it is not a sugar-daddy purchase; it is not a vanity purchase. There will be very clear economic and strategic reasons for buying the club. The HS2 rail line through South Yorkshire, a multi-million pound retail scheme in the town and a drive to boost tourism in the area in the coming years all "fit the bill" according to Chadwick.
Perhaps as headline-worthy as a Chinese billionaire investing in Barnsley is that Beane is coming along for the ride too. During his time as general manager of Major League Baseball side Oakland Athletics, he introduced the 'Moneyball' model for using computer-generated analysis to inform player recruitment and tactics. As for the millwall fan who says playing Leeds was a big game not Barnsley we can say the same for you. Playing millwall is like drawing a non league game in the cup.
Playing Leeds is like playing one o our big city neighbours. London has too many big teams and milwalll isn't one of them. Comment posted by Dravidio, at 19 Dec Dravidio.
I was born and brought up in Barnsley - though I have lived in many places worldwide - I have retired back here. I am a lifelong Barnsley fan and season ticket holder.
Thanks to all commentators who have been positive and encouraging. I support Patrick Cryne in finding a new solution to developing the club and moving forward. To the sneerers and denigrators of the town and club - why comment? Comment posted by Yoshik53, at 19 Dec Yoshik As a Portsmouth fan we have seen a billionaire take over.
However he has not splashed money but is working with the CEO and FD to build a good platform and has put limited money in, but is building the infrastructure. He and his family have a genuine interest and attend many games and watch all the rest via Internet.
Good luck Barnsley if you have new owners in a similar mould. Why don't they just change the name of the sport to Moneyball? More comments Back to top. Top Stories. Hamilton takes superb win in Sao Paulo. Live Live From the section Football. Also in Sport. Sport at COP26 — what did we learn?
