Do you ever take off the plastic on the Seymour Duncan's or just leave it on? Jul 16, 7. Pickups marked as Duncan Designed are made off-shore for import model guitars from various manufacturers, like my Squire Tele with the two Duncan Designed P90's in it, all Indonesian all the time and always way good. Pickups marked as Seymour Duncan are all Made in the U. All Seymour Duncan pups are Duncan Designed unless one of the other tonemeister's did the design work, but if it was designed on Seymour's dime it then becomes his design.
Jul 16, 8. They're simply marked different. They give it to you straight. Seymour Duncan is the real deal, Duncan Designed is the offshore Duncans. They are are marked Duncan Designed. Jul 16, 9. I heard that the Duncan Designed pickups were designed by stage and screen star Sandy Duncan. Is that incorrect? Jul 16, Some of the antiquity Duncans, a few Duncan reissues, and some pickup models of early PAF and Fender models, like the full sized '59, do not have any writing on top.
I've found few if any inexpensive 5 string basses that have a good low B string. The only one I did was a Lakland Skyline, which although "budget" in Lakland terms, was hardly cheap. It also had a 35" scale length, which accounted for much of the difference, I think. Christmas shopping and all that has taken most of my time, sorry.
The good news is that, since I did not take out the DD, I have been able to record a few sounds with them, which I did not do last weekend. On the other hand, the SD neck pickup has a different screw placement, so I will be installing just the bridge pickup for the test. I had no idea of which pots they use in basses. The one I have now has CTS k pots. Passive Fender bass guitars normally come with kOhm pots.
The ones in Squier VM series instruments are not of especially good quality. Upgrading to CTS pots may require the holes in the control plate to be enlarged. Well, I have just installed the SD bridge pickup. It is covered in black foam, that is why I did not see it first. Yes, there is a difference. My first impression is that the SD has more bass and more attack. I recorded a few sounds and then did a frequency analysis Audacity on both the SD and the DD recordings.
Not very scientific, but in the graph you can see clearly that the SD has louder harmonics, while the DD has a skinny spectrum. Interestingly i. Accepting that this is not an artifact, I would say that it explains the attack part of my perception.
On the other hand, I got more or less used to the DD sound, and I now understand why people like it. The recorded sound is quite usable, though I did not like it so much when played through my home amp Taurus combo.
Now I have to find the courage to install the neck PU I think I will get a new pickguard, not wanting to modify the one I got with the bass You can post now and register later.

Edited December 15, by stevie. Posted December 16, I have had 2 vmj's in the past and both were nice sounding ,especially the natural one with maple body, i had read there would be a big improvement by replacing the duncan designed with u. You got super old strings on it or something?
If it is a P90 guitar and it has k pots, which it perhaps might, it might sound totally different with a k pots and a better capacitor. Sometimes it is the pickup and sometimes not and the other wiring could be part of the dull and muddy.
It doesnt sound BAD. Just kind of meh. I just cant help but think that it could sound better with a PUP upgrade seeing as how DD pups are really not held in high regard around here. It would be nice to get some Fralins, or Lollars or something but like I said im not gonna spend more on pickups than I did on the fricken guitar. Don't know about the difference capacitors make, but changing the pots might be worthwhile and cheaper than replacing the pickups.
If it doesn't do enough, you can then replace the pickups. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me!!! It does make any pickup sound good, but good pickups really come to life through that amp. Dull, muddy, lifeless. Ended up selling the guitar like an idiot.
Should have just went with something I knew that was going to do what instead of being cheap and lazy. I found this on youtube and they sound fantastic IMO. Im gonna get set of these ASAP.
